A trench is usually a spring coat that gets borrowed for winter and fails at it. This one is built the other way round.
Woven plaid in a heavy cloth, with enough substance to block wind and to hold its own shape when the weather turns rough. The lapel is structured, so it stands when you turn it up instead of folding flat again at the first gust. The line is tailored through the waist but not closed off; there is still room for a knit. It falls past the hip, which keeps cold from getting in at the waist on the walk to the car.
